1830     Sturt explores the River Murray to the sea.
1834     Joe Byrne's grandfather, Joe Byrne arrives in NSW as a convict
1835     Mungarbareennah and Bonegilla settled near Albury

Melbourne

First squatters came from New South Wales to take up land in the upper Murray River valley. Some of them came down through the Monaro and others came down a route the follows the present line of the Hume Highway.They followed Major Mitchell's story of good land in "Australia Felix'. Many were pushed south by drought in New South Wales

Melbourne named

1838     Kiewa, Mitta, Ovens & King valleys settled by squatters from the north. Also squatting runs at Euroa, Benalla, and Mansfield.
4/1838     Faithfulls Creek massacre of aboriginals
1839     Overland mail service established between Sydney and Melbourne, travelled through Albury and Benalla.
1839     Latrobe appointed superintendent of Port Phillip.

1841 John Kelly   Ned Kelly's father John (Red) Kelly was sentenced and transported to Van Dieman's land
1842 Red Kelly   Red Kelly arrives in Australia as a convict
