Glenrowan Siege 28/6/1880 Special train leaves Melbourne to go to Beechworth - follow up on death of Aaron Sherritt

I caught the train at Spencer Street station in Melbourne

Train arrives at Benalla

..

Arrive at Glenrowan

I arrived at Glenrowan by train at about 2.30 am on the morning of the siege with Hare on the special train from Melbourne. I was one of a number of journalists who came up to cover the siege. (Sketcher)(Argus29/6/1880) (RC10025)

Begining of the siege

I watched the start of the siege from the railway platform (RC1609)

Mr. Hare came back to the platform, six or seven minutes after the flashes. He went back the second time, and it was not more than ten minutes after the flashes. He went back the second time, and it was not more than ten minutes altogether. He then came back, and blood was running down his fingers from the wound in his wrist, which was bleeding very freely, dripping as he came along; and we did the best we could for him, that is the four reporters left on the station. I was amongst them. I tied up his wrist with my silk handkerchief, and checked the haemorrhage, and then he went out again and disappeared. We saw him go out, he went again towards the Glenrowan hotel.

(RC10033) (RC10314)

After Sup Hare left for Benalla we walked up and down the platform to keep ourselves warm, and now and then constable would come up and give us a little news-how they were getting on-what they were doing- whether they had seen anything. One constable that came up, I forget who it was, said, "There is a bad nest of them at the back, keep a look out; there is a bad lot in that hotel over the road-keep a look out." (RC10038)

Arrival of Sup Sadleir and the police from Benalla and Wangaratta

I met the police from Wangaratta when they arrived. I checked the time when they arrived at the platform. Ten minutes to five. (RC9402)

Capture of Ned Kelly

I saw Ned Kelly's capture. (RC10042)

I drew Ned Kelly while he was lying in the van, and while he was in the station master's house; and I made drawings of the armour on the station platform (RC10046)

Release of the civilians

..

Burning of Jones's Inn

..

I wrote a letter to Sup Hare commenting on his performance at Glenrowan. See text (RC1602) see also (RC4681) (RC10078)

See my report as to what happened. A very entertaining account. (Argus5/7/80)

Photograph Royal Commission I gave evidence to the Royal Commission on 6/6/1881. (RC10021)

At the Royal Commission Sup Sadleir said that I lied when I reported that he was off the ground during the siege, and that the men and police were without his control. (RC2910)

What did the press have to say about my evidence (Argus8/6/81)
