See the Jerilderie Letter Photograph Stringybark Creek Murders 26/10/1878 I was on a search party with Constable Thom and when we got to Mr. Isard's on 29/10/178 we met up with Det Ward and gave him more information about the Stringy Bark murders. (RC 3148) Jerilderie Robbery 10/2/1879 I was with Sup Hare and the first party that watched Mrs Byrne's home (RC11098)

I did not trust Aaron Sherritt (RC11101)

Hare replaced by Nicolson 6/7/1879 In July Ass Com Nicolson started regular rifle practice for the officers stationed at Benalla. See my scores (RC1014) Spring 1879 Early 1880 On 24/9/1879 while stationed at Milawa I recieved instructions concerning the hunt for the KellyGang from Sup Sadleir. In part they stated:

'Constable Arthur" (the man in charge) "will first have the township of Miliewa patrolled by a constable, for the purpose of watching for the appearance of the outlaws, and should they pass through, it will be the duty of the constable simply to note carefully the direction by which they leave, preserve the tracks, and report without delay to Constable Arthur, who will immediately pass on the information to Sergeant Steele. This duty must be maintained from 10p.m. to 6a.m.

2ndly. Have the-bridge carefully watched by a constable, and, if necessary, a reliable hired assistant, whose wages must not exceed l0s. per diem, chargeable only for the time actually employed. It will be the duty of these men to watch carefully-and, above all, silently-the bridge, and should the outlaws pass, they will note carefully the direction they take and preserve the tracks, so as to enable the trackers to pick up the trail when they arrive. It is not intended to dispute the passage of the river with the outlaws, there being only one man at each point of observation-(that is if the whole party of outlaws should pass together; if but one or two pass, and the constable or his assistant should clearly recognise them, then he should certainly capture them, if an opportunity offers-J. S., Superintendent)-but simply to watch and afterwards indicate the direction taken by them. .... (RC2759)

Glenrowan Siege 28/6/1880

27/6/1880

I started to get ready to catch the special train in Benalla at about 3pm (RC8030)

Special train leaves Benalla to go to Beechworth - follow up on death of Aaron Sherritt

..

Arrive at Glenrowan

I arrived at Glenrowan by train at about 2.30 am with Sup Hare. (RC11112)

After we met Curnow the decision was taken to detach the pilot engine. SConst Kelly, Const Canny and I travelled towards Glenrowan on the pilot engine. (RC8047)

Begining of the siege

I was near Sup Hare when he was shot, he reloaded his gun. Soon after there were screams from the women who wanted to leave the Inn (RC11119) See also (Argus29/6/1880)(RC8076)

A little later we spread out around the Inn. When SConst Kelly came round I was the first person he met after leaving Insp O'Connor. Const Gascoigne and Phillips were nearby. (RC8143)

I found Ned Kelly's rifle and his skull cap (Argus2/6/1889)

Mrs Reardon tried to leave the Inn. Sgt Steele fired. See also (RC11320) (Argus28/3/82) (Argus29/3/82) (JJK)

Arrival of Sup Sadleir and police from Benalla

..

Just before daylight I was about thirty yards from the Inn, on the Wangaratta side of Jones's hotel, opposite in a line with the passage between the main part of the building and the detached kitchen. (RC11122)

Capture of Ned Kelly

My position at the start of Ned Kelly's capture. (RC10915)

Ned Kelly walked straight towards the hotel, and when within twenty yards of me, I was lighting my pipe at a log at the time, he raised his revolver and fired in my direction. I fired three shots at him. Ned Kelly still continued to advance. I ran in a circle for cover to a tree-that is in the direction of the railway station. I believe the shots hit the outlaw, because I could see him stagger distinctly and almost step backwards to recover his position again. (RC10345)

Release of the civilians

..

Burning of Jones's Inn

..

Sadleir reported on my efforts to the Commissioner of Police (Argus20/7/80) (RC2880)
