Murders at Stringy Bark Creek in the Wombat Ranges 26/10/1878 A few days after the murders of the police by the KellyGang in the ranges I made application to Captain Standish to give me permission to go in pursuit of them. I stated in that application that I would do my best to search for and capture them or die in the attempt, and now I can truthfully tell you that I faithfully kept my word. Arrival of Sup Sadleir and police from Benalla

I arrived at Glenrowan, where the rails were torn up at about 4.40 am from Wangaratta. (RC9393)

On arrival we were met by Rawlins and he told us what had happened. A volley had been fired from the house. We ran to the house, and down to the railway station. (RC9401)

We were met by the reporters of the press -Mr. McWhirter of the Age, Mr. Allen of the Telegraph came forward- They pulled out their books to note the time I arrived; and I said, "As you are going to make honorable mention of it, there is Sergeant Steele, and Consts Moore, Caussey, Welsh, and Montfort." Mr. Carrington put it down and took out his watch.

I went down the line towards with Sgt Whelan, over the culvet (RC9412)

I was armed with a double-barrelled gun and a Colt's revolver, and I knew how to use them well. The ammunition was not able to penetrate the house so I spent my time taking messages for Sadleir from about 6.30am on. I had to run to avoid the bullets as they whizzed past. Capture of Ned Kelly

It was alledged that I tried to kick Ned Kelly when we captured him (RC10936) I did it in response to the cowardly murder of my friend Const Lonigan. (RC10942)

A few minutes after wards, I ran back to where Superintendent Sadleir was, on the other side of the hotel, and expressed sorrow for what I had done. (RC10353)

Burning of Jones's Inn

I was standing down near the railway fence without cover when we were providing covering fire so SConst Johnston could set fire to the Inn (RC7288).

Const Armstrong and I followed Rev Gibney into the burning Inn and took Joe Byrne's body outside and took his armour off his body (Argus29/6/1880)(RC12256)

Later

Sadlier said in his official report that I greatly assisted him at the siege (Argus20/7/80)

Kelly Reward Board Following the meetings of the Reward Board in December 1880 I recieved a reward of about £137
