'''CAUTION TO MINERS GOING OVER LAND TO SNOWY RIVER'''

TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS

Sir,-I am a teamster, and, have just arrived from Gundagai after a very unprofitable journey, although I had £1 above the current rate. On, coming into town I find there are a great number of new arrivals from Adelaide and elsewhere anxious to go to the Snowy River Diggings. I wish you to favour me with an insertion of the following, for the benefit of teamsters and intending passengers, I perceive by to-day's ''Argus'' a person in Queen-street advertises to take passengers right through to the Snowy River Diggings for £3 5s. and I understand he has booked many for £3. I must here tell you, it is utterly impossible to take a waggon within 40 miles of the diggings, and the remaining 40 miles is more arduous to accomplish than 150 miles between here and [[Beechworth|Beechworth]]. No teamster ought to attempt to carry more than 20 or 25, and even this number will be felt as considerably over crowded. The £3 mentioned above is the charge of the booking-agent. Suppose he gives the teamster £2 15s, with 25, his freight will come to £68 15s. The place a waggon can really go to is to the Tumut, and it is above 40 miles from the diggings; and a six or five horse team cannot go there under a freight of £150 to pay his charges. Now, it is evident that the agent does not intend to send the passengers to the Snowy River , neither will any waggon take them, but will assuredly drop them on the other side of Albury, for they will find the ground so boggy that no loaded waggon can travel. The position of passengers so left will be most distressing. This I would advise-all persons booking themselves for the Snowy River to hold from the driver a guarantee (written), undertaking to convey them to Lobb's Hole, and, failing to do so, to place him and his team into the hands of the police.

Yours very respectfully,

J. BROWN.
