BEECHWORTH, SUNDAY

The great horse-stealing case was continued on Saturday. At mid-day the prisoner Cooke was taken ill with spitting of blood, and the doctor certified that he was unable to appear. The Crown thereupon entered a nolle prosequi. The counsel for the prisoners, Messrs, Bowman, F Brown, O'Leary, and Pitcairn, all addressed the jury, and the two latter called witnesses on behalf of the Baumgartons. Mr J T Smith replied for the Crown, and the jury retired at 6 o'clock, and were locked up until nearly 12, when being unable to agree they were discharged. It is probable the case will be adjourned to the Assizes. The Sessions business will last over to-morrow.
