Run in with Ben Gould McCormack and Ned Kelly Photograph Welcome, it is nice to be back with you after all these years. I had a horse called Ruta Cruta. Although he was a gelding he was as clever as old Wombat or any other stallion at running horses away and taking them on his beat which was from Greta swamp to the seven mile creek.

October 1870 was very wet. One night Ben Gould the hawker bogged his waggon between Greta and the Kelly home on seven mile creek. Next morning Ben was up early feeding his horses when he heard a bell and saw another horse of another hawker, Jerimiah McCormack. Ben knew McCormack's horse well and he sent his boy to take the horse back to McCormack at Greta. Mrs McCormack got the wrong end of the stick and accused Ben Gould of working the horse. Ned Kelly was around the place at the time and started to laugh at Mrs. McCormack and that did not help things.

As a result Ned Kelly was sentenced in in the court in Wangaratta to 3 months gaol for offensive behaviour and fined 10 pounds for assault. Ned Kelly's version of what happened is set out in his Jerilderie letter
