Importance of Athe Alexandra Times, and The Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express

The papers were newspapers based in Alexandra.

The Alexandra Times was established in town in 1868. The paper came from Woods Point and lasted in town until 1877, during the height of the gold mining days. The paper was produced twice a week; Johm Whitelaw editor. Of the 4 pages 2 were mainly covered with advertisements. Most of the news was local. We have not copied the doings of the local council and the road board, but we have copied out articles that show the growth of the town, the area, settlement and gold mining.

There are a number of articles that follow the birth and decline of the gold mining community at Gobur.

The Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express continued on a similar to the news and we have copied many of those articles. While Yea, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron are reffered to, most of the material relates to Alexandra.

The paper started in 1877 and ceased publication in 1908. It was a weekly, 4 page publication.

Most of the main events of the KellyGang are reproduced from the main Melbourne newspapers. But in many cases the articles are the telegrams from the reporters without any background.

During the 1870s JJH McColl was the owner.
