THE KELLY GANG

COROWA, SATURDAY
Five police from [[Corowa|Corowa]], together with constables from Beechworth, under inspector [[Brooke Smith|Brooke Smith]], left here at 3 o'clock this morning, in pursuit of a party of five men who passed through the township on Thursday night, supposed to be the Kelly gang. The men upon whom suspicion rests bought some articles, including a bag of chaff, from '''Levin's''' store, just before it was closed on Thursday evening, and then went to '''Grimms'''' barber's shop, where one of them was shaved. From Grimms' they went to the neighbouring publichouse, where they spent about £10. During the carousal they showed policeman's uniform under their plain clothes, and said they were in pursuit of the Kellys. The police here were informed of the matter, and it was found that whoever the masquerading parties were none other than the Kelly gang. Hence the present police movements. The constables under Inspector Brooke Smith called at the barber's shop just mentioned, and obtained a further description of the man who was operated upon, and then went on their journey. The only remaining policeman here is very reticent upon the subject, but it is supposed that the party have gone towards Urana.
