BENALLA, Monday

A murderous and apparently premeditated assault has been committed at Greta by Pat and Jim Quinn, mates of the notorious Power, the bushranger, and uncles of Young Kelly, who was under arrest recently on suspicion of being an accomplice of Power's. The victims are Senior-constable Hall and Constable Archdeacon, stationed at Greta. Pat Quinn was arrested yesterday by Mounted-constables Arthur and Davis, after a hard chase. The Wangaratta police are in pursuit of the other miscreant, Jim Quinn, who has done a sentence of two or three years in Pentridge. Hall was knocked senseless by Jim Quinn with a blow of a stirrup-iron while he - Hall - was handcuffing Quinn's brother. The two then attacked Archdeacon, and nearly killed him. He is out of danger, but has got a frightful scalp wound. The police station has been only recently established at Greta to prevent cattle duffing, which has been carried on to a considerable extent in that vicinity.
