Location

Beginings

In the 1830s and Henry K Hughes named his property 'Avenel' after a village in Gloucestershire.

The town was established on the sight of a ford over the creek on the main road to Beechworth and North Eastern Victoria. By 1859 a substantial stone bridge had been built.

In May 1865 Red Kelly was charged with unlawful possession of a hide while the family lived at Avenel . He was sentenced to 6 months. He died in Avenel and is buried in the Avenel cemetery

Supt Hare went to Avenel (Argus17/12/78)

There was a threat to the banks in town from the KellyGang before to the Euroa robbery. (RC 2ndreoportIX) (RC App8)

On the 4/121878 Sup Hare sent a memo. to Avenel to the effect that a foot constable, Kelly, armed with a revolver would be sent to the town to protect the bank. A constable should be placed on duty in plain clothes, and should never lose sight of the bank during office hours. That made three men at Avenel-that is the senior constable in charge, a mounted constable, and Const Kelly.(RC1245)

Military from the Garrison Artillery were sent to Avenel to protect banks in town after the Euroa robbery. Avenel was the most northern police station in the Burke district (RC119)
