First taken up in 1837 by Robert and Rev David Johnson, overlanders from New South Wales (40,000 acres)In 1876 the license was held by Alexander Kirkham Finlay and Colin Campbell Finlay and the half yearly license fee was £87 10 00

What was Bethanga like in the late 1870's
Bethanga was the largest run in in the Beechworth area in 1879 (Argus6/3/79)
The Minister of Mines threatened some time before that if the mining leases were not worked according to law, they should be forfeited. Kitchingman’s Pyrites Works started again in a week or so.
The Land Commission went to Bethanga. (Argus20/3/79)
