Beginings

The first settlers moved into the area in 1836 with sheep. The town was founded in 1851

Importance of Gisborne

During the gold rush of the 1850’s, Gisborne flourished, boasting a brewery, two wine saloons, eight hotels, grocery, grain and hay stores, harness makers, blacksmiths, butchers’ shops and many cottages and tents.

In 1861 when the railway arrived from Melbourne the town grew rapidly with new hotels, shops, churches and schools
