The Melbourne Club was founded by squatters in 1839. It moved to it present location in 1858.

The Melbourne was known as the leading men's club in Victoria. Many of its members have had significant positions in Government and commerce. Police Commissioner [[Standish|Standish]] was a member and many of his officers were concerned that things were arranged in the club between Standish and a small group of senior police who were also members.
When [[MacBean|Robert McBean]] of [[Kilfera|Kilfera]] was stuck up by [[Harry Power|Harry Power]] he met Standish in the Melbourne Club and arranged for the police to put a reward of £500 for Power's capture
