The KellyGang 'traded' horses along the Murrumbidgee. Before some of the boys had travelled through the area shearing.

What was the Murrumbidgee River like in the late 1870's

The Murrumbidge btought water from the Snowy Mountains to the dry plains of the Riverina. The properties along the way (see below) were some of the rischest properties in the area. They mainly produced wool but there were some cattle properties

The area was was first settled by europeans in the late 1840's. In the 1870's there were still large flocks of wild life and lots of fish in the River.

The river was a highway for people on 'the wallaby'. Instead of travelling on the roads they moved from property to property along the river. In that way they got work, food and water.

Paddle steamers came up the Murrumbidgee at least as far as Hay and took wool down the Murray to Echuca .

What happened in the area of the Murrumbidgee River after the time of the Kelly Gang

How has the Murrumbidgee River changed

The water of the Murrumbidgee has been damed. Most of the large properties have been reduced in size by closer settlement. There are a number of irrigation schemes. Many of the species of fild life that were common in the 1870's are now rere and need protection.

What is happening down the Murrumbidgee River today

The Murrumbidge is at the centre of plans by Government to reduce the amount of water used by man and to look after the environment.
