What was Samaria like in the late 1870s

Photograph

Map The town was little more than a coach stop. The road between Benalla and Mansfield was an important route between the centres, particularly when gold was being mined in the hills. As the gold declined so do the need to travel between the two centres. Later people often went from Mansfield to Longwood and caught the train to Benalla rather than take the coach over the bumpy mountain road.
