Early Years I came from Mooroopna near Shepparton and had been stationed at Mansfield (RC1732) Mansfield Murders 26/10/1878 I was selected by Sup Sadleir to be a part of the search party because I knew Ned Kelly (RC1733)
I was stationed at Mansfield at the time. (RC15489)
Sgt Kennedy, Const Lonigan, and McIntyre and I (RC1727) were equipped with Spencer rifles, breach loading fowling pieces and revolvers and extra ammunition. I was shot by the KellyGang. One of our horses was a chestnut gelding, M 42, with white legs and face (RC12376) The pack-horse found by Const Johnson in the Warby Ranges was B 87 (RC12404)
Sgt Kennedy and Const McIntyre set out details of what happened. Ned Kelly gave his account of Stringybark Creek in the Cameron Letter. see also (Argus29/6/1880)(CHC) (JJK)
The search party that recovered our bodies left Mansfield in heavy rain at night and made its way out through some of the thickest scrub in the area. The search party set up a base camp about a quarter of a mile away. The police inspector, constables and Dr Reynolds went to the site and found our bodies. They could not find Sgt Kennedy's body until much later. The search party found Const Lonigan and me lying on our backs. The KellyGang had turned all their pockets out. (CHC)
Dr Reynolds had Lonigan and my heads bandaged and they then tied our bodies on to a pack horse, one on either side. It was a rough way to travel.
Back in Mansfield Dr Reynolds conducted a post mortem. The KellyGang had not riddled our bodies with bullets.(Argus30/10/78)
See the evidence of my inquest. (Age30/10/78) See details of my injuries. (Age9/8/1880)
Joe Byrne was found with my ring when they took his body out of the hotel at the Glenrowan siege.Ned Kelly gave an account of what happened at Stringybark Creek in his statement to the press at the Glenrowan Siege (Argus 29/6/80) (OMA1/7/80)
(Age28/10/78)
Our memorial was opened in Mansfield (Argus23/4/80)
Ned Kellys Trial A lot of information about my death was given at Ned Kelly's trial. Early Service I was born in 1863 at Lake View, Killarney in Ireland. I was a 36 year old bachelor when I was murdered.
I had been in Melbourne for a number of years. At one time I acted as orderly for the chief commissioner, and was subsequently told off for duty at the Theatre Royal (Argus28/10/78) (Argus29/10/78) What happened to Const Scanlon's family KellyGang
