Mr [[William Elliott|Elliott]], proprietor of the [[Jerilderie|Jerilderie]] "Herald," died suddenly in his office last week. He was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland , on June 30, 1851, and came to Australia when three years old, his family settling in the Hunter River district. As a young man he joined the Education Department, and was sent to Jerilderie in 1874 to establish the public school. He acquired the Jerilderie 'Herald" about 1886 and was actively engaged in its production almost up to the time of his death. During his long residence at Jerilderie he was active in practically every public movement He was secretary of the Riverina and Pastoral and Agricultural Society, Race Club, New Settlers' League, Railway League and other bodies. He was appointed Coroner in 1889 and held the position until he resigned about two years ago. He joined the Riverina Masonic Lodge. In 1882 and was secretary of it almost continuously up till the time of his death. In recognition of his long service the Grand Lodge conferred upon him some years ago the rank of PDGIW.
He was in Jerilderie during the raid by the Kelly gang and was compelled by the gang to hold the bag in the bank while they filled it with their spoils.
He is survived by Mrs Elliott, three sons, and three daughters.
