A vacancy for the representation of the Southeast Riding, of the Shire of Benalla has been caused by the resignation of Cr. Simson, which has been accepted by the Council, that gentleman having parted with his qualification. No official notification-of-the election to fill the vacancy has yet appeared, but it will be gone on with at once. Rumour is busy with the names of candidates to fill the vacancy, and there are several aspirants for office, but we trust the electors will do their duty on this occasion, and, laying aside all petty jealousies, earnestly strive to reform the Council, which body has fallen into such extremely bad odour of late. There are good men resident in the riding, and these should be sought out and induced to take a part in our local affairs. We hear that a requisition is being signed for the purpose of inviting Mr M'Bean to come forward, and we are certain that Mr [[MacBean|M'Bean]] would prove a great acquisition to the Council, if elected. We can only hope he may be induced to contest the seat. The name of Mr Wallace is also mentioned; and it is asserted that Mr William Little has declared his intention to contest the election, no matter-who may offer himself.
