The North Eastern Ensign at KellyGang 31/5/1872

(full text transcription)

A vacancy for the representation of the Southeast Riding, of the Shire of Benalla has been caused by the resignation of Cr. Simson, which has been accepted by the Council, that gentleman having parted with his qualification. No official notification-of-the election to fill the vacancy has yet appeared, but it will be gone on with at once. Rumour is busy with the names of candidates to fill the vacancy, and there are several aspirants for office, but we trust the electors will do their duty on this occasion, and, laying aside all petty jealousies, earnestly strive to reform the Council, which body has fallen into such extremely bad odour of late. There are good men resident in the riding, and these should be sought out and induced to take a part in our local affairs. We hear that a requisition is being signed for the purpose of inviting Mr M'Bean to come forward, and we are certain that Mr M'Bean would prove a great acquisition to the Council, if elected. We can only hope he may be induced to contest the seat. The name of Mr Wallace is also mentioned; and it is asserted that Mr William Little has declared his intention to contest the election, no matter-who may offer himself.

A shocking occident has happened to Constable Curtin. He left Euroa on Monday evening, at about 9 o'clock, for the purpose of obtaining a distress warrant against a hawker named Gould. He engaged De Boos's waggonette, and a leather merchant named. Wilson and Samson the waggoner were with him. It appears that they went safely to Violet Town and were coming- from there to Mr Gall's Curtin driving. Attempting to avoid a rut or fissure, and, turning, probably rather short, the horse stood still suddenly, when Curtin was precipitated to the ground, not only forcing his pistol against his stomach but also dislocating his neck. The poor fellow was almost instantaneously killed, he-merely saying, "My bladder is burst. There was an inquest held at Violet Town on Tuesday by Dr Healey, when: a verdict of accidental death was returned. Curtin leaves a wife and five children
