Every sound startled him, for he feared the bushrangers were on his track, and progress through the scrub and forest, where huge fallen trees half hidden in bracken and undergrowth barred the way, was painful and difficult. Resting for a time by the creek where he made his latest entries in the note book, he pushed on by daylight through almost uninhabited country, meeting no one until he reached the homestead of a settler named M’Coll, about one and a half miles from Mansfield. There he waited a little while, telling disconnected scraps of his story, after which he continued his sad journey to Mansfield , where he arrived to disturb the sleepy quiet of the township Sunday afternoon with the gruesome tale, which, bit by bit, Inspector Pewtress drew from him.
