First run ins with the law In August 1865, when we lived near Beveridge, I was acquitted of slaughtering a bull belonging to John Chisholm.

The family then moved to Greta.

Did they try and get me on a trumpted up charge. Something to do with a hide (Ensign7/1/1873)

In 1876 I was behind in the rent for my selection at Lurg.

Soon after I arrived in north eastern Victoria, Jack Lloyd and I were convicted of horse stealing at Beechworth and sentenced to 3 years. see (RC3239)(RCApp10)

Escape north On about 4/11/1878 SConst Kelly saw one of my daughters in Benalla (RC7986) Mass arrest of the sympathizers On 2/1/1879 Commissioner Standish ordered the arrest of about 20 sympathizers including myself and Jack Lloyd Jnr. He took that action under section 5 of the Felons Apprehension Act. Most of the sympathizers were held in Beechworth goal.

I was arrested near Benalla by ... (Argus4/1/79) (Argus6/1/79)(OMA7/1/79)

I managed to send a telegram home after I was arrested to warn the KellyGang "Turn the four bullocks out of the paddock"

We were held without ever being given a chance to defend them selves. We were remanded in custody for periods of 7 days. Only one of the sympathizers was fully represented by a lawyer. The magistrates repeated the remands each week for over 3 months before the sympathizers were finally released. See (Argus3/2/79) (OMA11/2/1879) (OMA18/2/79)

At the start, the arrests we had public support in Melbourne but that turned into general contempt for the police. The mass arrests resulted in fewer people being prepared to assist the police or to supply information about the KellyGang .

I was finally discharged. (Argus26/2/80)

Later in 1879 On 28/9/1879 I was cited Foote, (Pat Quinn) with the KellyGang between Oxley and Wangaratta. We were on foot.(RC2ndreportXII) What happened to Tom Lloyd's family My daughter Jane married Ken Brown who served as a Rat of Tobruk in WW11 and then went to university after the war and became a much admired teacher and then principal. Finally lectured at Toorak Teachers College

My daughter Catherine loved Ned Kelly. (Herald29/6/1880) Later she married William Cleave. She bore him 7 children, Priscilla (b1896),Thomas (b1897), Catherine (b1899), Eileen (b1900), Eileen (b1901), Josephine (b1903), and Henry (b1907). Catherine died in 1934.

Did one of my sons shoot himself at Greta (Argus16/1/1880)

My daughter Catherine was very keen on Ned Kelly and she followed him down to Benalla after he had been captured by police. (Herald29/6/1880) (SMH30/6/80) Glenrowan Siege
