Mass arrest of the sympathizers On 2/1/1879 Commissioner Standish ordered the arrest of about 20 sympathizers including myself and my brother Richard. He took that action under the Felons Apprehension Act. We were held in Beechworth goal.

I arrested near Hedi by ..(Argus7/1/79).

I was remanded by the court in Wangaratta. It was alledged that my real name was William Woods. (OMA9/1/1879)

We were held without ever being given a chance to defend our selves. We were remanded in custody for periods of 7 days. Only one of us sympathizers was represented by a lawyer. The magistrates repeated the remands each week for over 3 months before we were finally released, See also (Argus17/4/79)

At the start, the arrests had public support in Melbourne but that turned into general contempt for the police. The mass arrests resulted in fewer people being prepared to assist the police or to supply information about the KellyGang

After the Siege What happened to William Strickland's family Was I in Pentridge (Argus6/11/78) Or was it Richard?
