About 20 special constables have been sworn in at [[Corowa|Corowa]] for the protection of the town from the attacks of bushrangers. Mr '''Nihill''', of the Customs Department, was fined £20 by the Bench for refusing to be sworn in, or to perform the duties required under the Special Police Act. He produced a telegram from the chief collector of customs at Sydney instructing him to refuse to be sworn in, as it would interfere with the execution of his duty. The ''[[Newspapers|Wahgunyah News]]'' of the 7th inst states that the fine was subsequently remitted.
