LATE TELEGRAM
( From our own Correspondent)

MELBOURNE , Thursday.

The following telegram was received late last night from Benalla:- The excitement about the Kellys at Beechworth has subsided, and the police have returned. The police have scoured the ranges about Greta, where the gang are believed to be living. The utmost activity is prevailing. Superintendent Hare arrived this evening in Benalla and relieved Mr CH Nicolson. It is believed that Miss Kelly is supplying the outlaws with food.

In the Assembly yesterday, Mr Zox moved a resolution with the object of preventing single members clearing the galleries of strangers. After a short debate the motion was found to be informal, and was withdrawn.

After dinner the debate on the Reform Bill was resumed by Mr Wrixon, who disapproved of both the Berry and the Service schemes. Mr Vale condemned, and Dr Madden supported, the Government Bill. The debate was adjourned.

Mr William's resolution, re payment of members, was reported, and agreed to. The bill was read first time, and its second reading fixed for Thursday.

A FALSE ALARM
On Sunday last, as a resident of the locality was passing up the head of Byrne’s Gully to the tableland between the Woolshed and El Dorado he heard a dog bark about sixty yards off. On turning round, a man was observed to be hiding behind a rock whose description answered that of the outlaw Joseph Byrnes. The Queensland black trackers and six constables, in charge of Lieutenant O’Connor and Mr CH Nicolson, Assistant Commissioner of Police, visited the place indicated on Monday, and upon strict examination and enquiry ascertained that it was not the outlaw named nor any other member of the gang.
