'''THE REDUCTION OF SERGEANT STEELE'''

[BY TELEGRAPH]

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT)

WANGARATTA, WEDNESDAY

A meeting, convened by the mayor on a requisition of a number of the inhabitants, was held in St. George's Hall to-night, to consider the action of the Police Commission in recommending that Sergeant [[Steele|Steele]] be reduced to the ranks. There were between 150 and 200 persons present, and the mayor (Mr Hearn) occupied the chair. There was a marked and warm unanimity of feeling in favour of Sergeant Steele, and in condemnation of the finding of the commission.

The resolutions were carried unanimously and with cheers, approving of Sergeant Steele's conduct ; and on the motion of Mr Tilt, seconded by Mr Ely, it was resolved that a memorial be prepared and forwarded to the Parliamentary representatives of the district for presentation to the Chief Secretary, requesting him before carrying into effect the recommendation of the police commission, to be pleased to grant a special inquiry into the conduct of Sergeant Steele in connexion with the pursuit and capture of the outlaws. The memorial was then signed by a great number of those present. The movement has been already taken up in various parts of the district.
