Messrs Hicks and Sampson, the Government and local auditors, are busy with the shire audit, and we are informed these gentlemen speak in the highest terms of the efficient manner in which the books are kept by the treasurer and secretary, Mr Moon.

The machine situated on the U.T. Creek has been sold at a good price to go to Kilmore, and we understand the plant will be at once removed; and we must say thiss speaks very little for the public spirit of the residents of Alexandra, this being the only machine available for public trial crushings.

A cricket match will be played at Gobur on Saturday, 9th November, between the Alexandra eleven and a local team. The following are requested to turn out for practice this (Saturday) afternoon, when the final selection will be made:- Messers Bainbridge, T Scale, Brown, Sault, Wollaston, F Moon, G Cookson, Mossman, Wilson, Howitt, Syneot, Stillman, F Hall, Purcell.

The Rev. W Hutchinson, A.B., will preach in Alexandra both morning and evening, and also at Mr Armstrong's school, Acheron, at 3 pm. The Rev Mr Osborne will preach at Thornton at 11 am, Upper Thornton 2.00 pm, and Alexandra at 7 pm; and Mr Bowden at Gobur at 7 pm.

Mr G Wilson obtained a nice piece of gold from his claim at the Acheron, known as the Gang Forward, near the well known Fiery Beef. From 4 tons of quarts he obtained 9 oz 15 dwt of gold.

THE MANSFIELD MURDERS

Great excitement was caused here upon the receipt of the news of the frightful murders perpetrated by the four wretches who were out, and every information was waited for with great anxiety, as, until Thursday evening, the fate of Sergeant Kennedy was unknown. When however, it was ascertained that the poor fellow had been butchered in cold blood, the feeling of horror and disgust was intense. Below we give all the information we have been able to obtain from the Melbourne dailies and our own correspondent at Mansfield, who has kindly furnished us with news from time to time. The government have now placed £500 a man as the reward for their capture, dead or alive. The four villains are proclaimed outlaws, and any one may therefore shoot them down without a word of warning. It is from the desperate character of the scoundrels, very unlikely any of them will be captured alive, as they know they have to fight for their lives, which are forfeited, and will doubtless die rather than be taken alive, and so cheat the hangman.

MANSFIELD, 27th October

News has just reached Mansfield that Constables Lanogan and Scanlan have been shot dead by four bushrangers, at Stringy Bark Creek, about twenty miles from here. Constable M'Intyre escaped, and has just arrived with the intelligence. His horse, however, was shot down from under him. Sergeant Kennedy is also missing. Sub-inspector Pewtress, Dr Reynolds, Mr Collopy and others left just now on horseback to scour the country in search of the murderers, and to bring home the dead bodies. The bushrangers are supposed to be the notorious Kelly's party, for whom the constables were in search.
