THE FORAGE CONTRACTOR IN THE KELLY COUNTRY

TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS

Sir,—While the papers are full of the Glenrowan affair, and people are talking how the reward shall be divided, &c., may I call your attention to the case of an individual who, considering the nature of his connexion with the police force after the Stringy Bark massacre, seems to have been altogether over- looked in the prevailing excitement.

I allude to Mr Chas. W. Lloyd, of Hurdle Creek, Oxley. This gentleman at the time of the outbreak was contractor for supplying forage for the two or three troopers then at Oxley and Hedi (27 miles further up the King River). When the force was increased to 25 or 30 men he still had to carry out his contract, and in spite of wind and weather, bad roads, and last, though not least, the chance of having his drays burnt, and himself shot by the gang, this man, the father of five little children, risked everything, and kept the force supplied.

It must be remembered by your readers that this forage had to be carried 15 miles through a country populated by Kelly sympathisers.—

Yours, &c.,

FRED. DUDLEY-WALKER

Club Hotel, Albury, NSW, July 21.
