A REMINISCENCE OF THE KELLY GANG

SERGEANT KENNEDY'S WATCH RECOVERED

RESTORED TO A COMRADE OF THE MURDERED MAN

BENALLA Monday

Mr W J E Wallace, landlord of the Broken River Hotel, on Saturday evening became possessed of the gold watch Sergeant Kennedy was wearing when he was murdered by the Kelly gang at the Wombat, 15 years ago. The watch, which had been presented to the deceased by the Anti Cattle stealing Association for services rendered in suppressing cattle stealing, has not received much ill-usage during its 15 years retention. The case is in good order, but the works show signs of having been operated upon by unskilled hands. It became known to Mr Wallace some 12 months ago that the watch was in the possession of a certain person in the district, and he then used his influence to have it restored to Mrs Kennedy, but his efforts failed. He was surprised, therefore, to find the watch in a parcel which had been left by a little girl as the hotel during his absence. Mr Wallace, although he was engaged in the pursuit of the outlaws, being then a mounted constable, is much respected by the relatives of the Kelllys, and hence it is that the watch has been sent to him. On Saturday night he telegraphed to Mansfield to the widow of the late sergeant, apprising her of the fact of the watch being in his possession, and received a reply expressive of delight at the announcement.
