OPENING OF THE COMMON SCHOOL, GODFREY'S CREEK

The new building recently erected, was formally opened on the 27th ult., by a tea meeting, followed by various addresses, interspersed with musical selections by amateurs. The building measures 30 x 18 feet with 12 feet walls and fine portico with double doors. The whole has been erected within contract time, and reflects great credit on the district. The school is vested in the Board, and the committee have bean untiring in their exertions. The tables were provided partly by private donations and partly by the committee, and where all were so well and really luxuriously furnished it would be invidious to parental care. The ladies of the immediate locality were assisted by some of the beauty of Alexandra and Siring Creek, and we can safely say that such a collection of belles have never adorned a school before. The room was most elegantly decorated by three young ladies of the neighborhood, who showed considerable skill and refinement, and made one believe that it was spring in place of winter.

After the tea had been done ample justice to, Mr Blythman was voted to the chair, and introduced the Rev Toomath who gave a history of the effects of the committee’s action, and correspondence with the Board of Education for nine months. Mr Dennis of Ghin Ghin, also made a few very pertinent remarks, also Mr Williams and Mr Allen. The proceedings were enlivened by various selections from oratorios, &c performed by amateurs in a most creditable manner, ably assisted by Master Walter on the harmonium.

About £17 or £18 will be received when all the accounts come in, and as the expenses have been kept down as much as possible, a considerable benefit will accrue to the school fund. The usual votes of thanks to the ladies, the choir, &o., having been carried by acclamation, the proceedings terminated with the National Anthem.
