The recommendations of the Police Reward Board are not, apparently, regarded as altogether satisfactory by the Chief Secretary. Mr Berry is consequently taking time to consider his position as regards the board before acting upon the report. Half the money, or £4,000, is given by the Government of New South Wales, who agreed to refer the distri bution to the Victorian board, and who may in any case consider themselves bound by the decision of the referees to whose ap pointment they consented.

The Minister of Railways has decided that Mr A Wyatt, PM, must defray the cost of the accident which resulted from his re leasing the brake of a goods train at Mangalore recently. This will amount to about £50. Mr Wyatt has explained to Mr Patterson that he released the brake as he thought it would assist the progress of the train, he not being aware that the engine was on another line shunting some trucks. When the brake was released the guard's van and trucks ran down the incline upon which they were standing, and collided with some other trucks. Mr Patterson accepted the explana tion, on the understanding that the cost of the repairs shall be defrayed by Mr Wyatt and this the latter gentleman has agreed to do.
