MELBOURNE CARRIERS AGENTS
TO THE EDITOR 0F THE ARGUS
Sir,-Our attention has been directed to a letter in jour Thursday's issue, complaining of an alleged overcharge in the carriage of a portmanteau forwarded by us to Beechworth on 25th May.
We now beg the favour of being permitted to give your correspondent's statement the most unqualified contradiction, and to place the matter in its proper light.
The portmanteau in question was handed to us on the 5th March by a carrier, who represented that he had brought it from Beechworth, and who demanded 10s carriage. The article being consigned to our care, and 10s being a very moderate freight, we at once paid that amount.
The pottmanteau remaned in our possession from the 5th March till the 25th May, when it was ordered back to Beechworth, for whick service we charged the very modest sum of 10s, 'which, with the original 10s. paid to the person who brought the portmanteau to us, and 2s 6d for storage, made 22s 6d, the amount paid on delivery.
We defy Mr Bachelder to prove that the 12s 6d referred to in his letter was paid to us, and we have no hesitation in asserting that he did not do anything of the kind.
Hoping that we have disposed of this matter satisfactorily,
We are, Sir, your obedient servants,
REYNOLDS and ENGLISH.
Mebourne, Juno 23.
