CHARGE AGAINST A FORMER ASSOCIATE OF THE KELLY GANG
Amongst the prisoners brought before the Carlton Court yesterday was a woman who became known in connection with the Kelly gang which gamed such notoriety some years ago before being finally suppressed by the police. Catherine Byrne, sister of John Byrne, one of the outlaws who was shot at Glenrowan was charged with being a vagrant. It appeared that she had resided in the city of Prahran until her misconduct brought her into trouble there, and she transferred herself and her offensive behaviour to the neighbourhood of Queen's place, off Madeline - street, Carlton , and since she has been there has kept up a most disreputable course of living. Last Sunday evening Plain-clothes Constables Vivian and Bosom saw her wielding an axe and threatening to knock the brains out of anybody who might come within her reach. Mr Craven JP, presided on the bench. Constable Cantfield stated that he was present at the Glenrowan affair when Ned Kelly was arrested, and at that time this woman, whose age is now 35 years, was very conspicuous by her unseemly behaviour. She was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
