MANSFIELD

The last instalment of the apparatus, required for the construction of the telegraph station at Mansfield arrived by coach on Tuesday morning. The Government have leased the, premises of Mr M'Kenize for a term of five years, and we understand the assistant attached to the telegraph station at Jamieson is ordered to attend at Mansfield on the 9th instant for tho purpose of taking charge of the new station. As the Shire Council have guaranteed to cover any actual loss, and Mansfield being the centre of a populous district, it is not improbable that the, present unremunerative station at Jamieson will be discontinued.

The new manse for the Rev Father M'Gillicuddy is being rapidly proceeded with. Mr Kilgour is the contractor, and judging from several buildings in the town ship erected by this gentleman, we are confident that the work will be satisfactorily performed, and when finished will form at additional ornament to the township.

The inquiry by Superintendent Donkey into the charges preferred against constable Buck, stationed at Jamieson, has resulted in the constable's being committed for trial on two charges of Larceny.

Owners are required by the Mansfield police for the undermentioned horses:- Dark bay or brown horse, K near neck: black mare, J near rump; black or blue roun horse, W over J C near shoulder.

A superior school has been opened hero by Mr Hanslip, of the London University. .Judging from the many complaints made by those parents who are in good circumstances, and are unwilling to send their children to the Common School, an opportunity is now afforded them for giving their children a sound liberal education. Mr Hanslip contemplates receiving only a limited number of pupils, and we have no doubt that the abilities of the master will succeed in training "Young Australia" how to shoot in the right direction.

The trial and conviction of David Lake, at Mansfield Police Court, on Saturday last, has given satisfaction to the respectable portion of our population. For years rumor was rife as to the cattle lifting properties or Lake, but he cleverly eluded many attempts to make a conviction against him, however, Sergeant Chadwick succeeded in sheeting home to Lake the charge of illegally using a horse, the property of Mr Nevins of Mansfield. As there are owners required for several horses supposed to be stolen by the prisoner, it is not improbable that when his six months have expired the charge of felony will be proved against the prisoner. Great praise is due to Sergeant Chadwick for his indomitable perseverance in tracing up the several circumstances of the cast.

Dr Rowe, the Coroner, proceeded to Jamieson to-day for the purpose of holding an inquest on the body of a newly born infant found concealed in a water closet. The mother of the child is in custody.
