Early Years My father ran the Royal Mail Hotel in Avenel.

I very nearly drowned in 1865 while on my way to school. Ned Kelly saved me. He was 10 and I was 5.

As a thankyou my parents gave Ned Kelly a silk sash. It had a gold tassell and he wore it at the siege at Glenrowan. It is now on display in the museum in Benalla.
