Importance of gold mining

Many of the towns in North Eastern Victoria owed their start to the descovery of aluvial gold. See places such as Alexandra, Beechworth, Bright, Buckland, Dargo, Glen Wills, Gobur, Harrietville, Myrtleford, Omeo, Rutherglen, Yackandandah, .

The KellyGang's involvement with gold mining

Hare did some gold mining in the 1850s when he first arrived in Australia (FH)

When the KellyGang needed money they often turned their hand to gold mining.

Their base near Stringy Bark Creek was one such area and it is likely that they did some mining in the Yackandandah area

Mining Boards

The mining industry was controlled by local mining boards. Mr William Ward was the Chairman of the Beechworth Mining Board.
